Cissy Houston says she'll do what she's gotta do to protect her family. The long suffering mother of the late Whitney Houston is withholding the inheritance money from her granddaughter Bobbi Kris. She feels Bobbi Kris is surrounded by negative influences and will run through the cash. Cissy is also not happy with BeBe Winans. She is mad at him for writing a book about his friendship with Whitney. Cissy is writing her own book about her famous daughter that is coming out in February of next year. In other Whitney Houston news, get ready for tributes to her this fall. First up, the 18-track tribute album, I Will Always Love You: The Best Of Whitney Houston, comes out November 13th. The coffee table book, Whitney: Tribute To An Icon, comes out November 27th. The Lifetime network presents their TV special remembering Whitney Houston, which will feature home videos and interviews with mom Cissy Houston, brother Gary, daughter Bobbi Kris and sister-in-law Pat Houston. On October 24th, the Houston's reality show, On Our Own debuts on Lifetime. On November 16th, it’s a Grammy Salute To Whitney Houston, with Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson and Usher Yolanda Adams and CeCe Winans that will air on CBS.
Was the Nicki Minaj-Mariah Carey feud just a publicity stunt? According to Mariah's husband, Nick Cannon, it was. American Idol Judges Nicki and Mariah had a public feud where Nicki threatened to shoot Mariah on the audition set of Idol. Has the show come to this? American Idol used to be about the talent. Now the focus is on the judges, but the producers still love this kind of publicity for their show.
Janet Jackson is tired of the executors of the Michael Jackson estate trying to muddy her name. Michael is profiled in the new book Untouchable: The Strange Life And Tragic Death Of Michael Jackson by Randy Sullivan. The book claims Michael Jackson's burial was delayed for three months because Janet wanted her $40,000 deposit back before the burial happened. Janet now wants to sue Vanity Fair magazine for running an excerpt from the book talking about her. Janet feels the executors behind the Michael Jackson estate are on a campaign to destroy her name.
Apollo Live is the Centric network's singing reality show, and it kicks off Saturday, December 1st. Comedian Tony Rock will be hosting and the judges include Gladys Knight, Michael Bivins, and Doug E Fresh.
Speaking of The Empress Of Soul, Gladys Knight is also part of the ensemble for one of the two sitcoms being produced by comedian Byron Allen. The sitcom The First Family is about an African American First Family in the White House. Christopher B. Duncan (The Jamie Foxx Show) and Kellita Smith (The Bernie Mac Show) play the President and First Lady. Also starring are Gladys Knight, Marla Gibbs, Jackee Harry and John Witherspoon. The second Allen-produced show is Mr. Box Office with Bill Bellamy, Vivica A. Fox, Jon Lovitz and Keshia Knight Pulliam. Bellamy plays an A-List movie star who is sentenced to community service teaching at an underprivileged high school. The First Family and Mr. Box Office both air Sundays beginning at 8pm on PHL17. Vivica A. Fox is also starring on the show Prank My Mom, which airs Tuesday nights at 10pm on Lifetime.
What is going on with Martin Lawrence? The popular comedian and actor has been in hiding. He is going through a divorce and looking for ways to revive his career. His TV pilot for CBS fell through, and he has been dealing with depression. Martin can’t believe his career has come to this. In the 90’s, he was on top with his Martin TV show and hit movies like Bad Boys with Will Smith. Martin's friends are worried about him and are wondering how they can help. Jamie Foxx has reached out to Martin to help him. Foxx wants him for a movie project.
Speaking of Jamie Foxx, he returns to the big screen this December in the Quentin Tarantino’s film Django. The movie, about a former slave turned bounty hunter trying to rescue his wife from slavery, also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson and Kerry Washington. Foxx has also signed on for the movie White House Down with Channing Tatum. Foxx will play the President Of The United States, who is taken hostage in the White House. Foxx recently revealed plans to do a comedy movie for fellow Comedian Kevin Hart.
Did The Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin have surgery to lose weight? Franklin, 70, looks great. Sources say The Queen had lap band surgery and she underwent a breast reduction.
Jill Scott has been added to the cast of David E. Talbert's film Baggage Claim. Paula Patton stars in the movie about a flight attendant who has 30 days and 30,000 miles to find a husband. Derek Luke and Octavia Spencer are also part of the cast. Millions tuned into the check out Scott and Queen Latifah in the Lifetime movie remake of Steel Magnolias, which re-airs Saturday, October 13th.
Cedric The Entertainer will be hosting the Soul Train Awards, which will air on the BET and Centric networks on Sunday, November 25th. New Edition is getting a Lifetime Achievement Award. R Kelly has been nominated for Album Of The Year, and he's also up for the Ashford & Simpson Songwriter Of The Year Award. Other nominees include Usher, Estelle and John Legend.
Michael Winans, Jr. may be headed to jail. The young son of Michael Winans, Sr. and grandson of David “Pop” Winans and Delores “Mom” Winans has pleaded guilty for his role in a Ponzi scheme Winans, Jr. faces up to 30 years in jail. Sentencing takes place February 27th.
Come See About Me: The Mary Wilson-Supremes Collection kicks off in January at the African American Museum. The collection will be on display from January 25th until June 22nd, and it features over 30 of the Supremes' most glamorous gowns. The African American Museum is located at 7th and Arch Streets.
On November 16th, Spike TV is doing a tribute special to Eddie Murphy celebrating his 30-year career. Eddie Murphy: One Night Only will feature his work in film, musical performances and sketch comedy.
TV One's popular UnSung documentary series returns in January for a sixth season. I love this show. Their newest profiles will include The Whispers, Lou Rawls, Eddie Kendricks and Isaac Hayes, just to name a few.
Paula Abdul is coming to Dancing With The Stars. She is going to be a guest judge on the show October 15th.
Pilar Sanders is now living in a hotel with her kids. The ex-wife of Football Star Deion Sanders is still involved in a bitter dispute with her ex, even though she is getting over $10,000 a month in child support. Pilar's gas and electricity were cut off for non-payment forcing her to move to the hotel. Looks like she may bring Deion back to court to cover those expenses too.
At the movies, it's Middle Of Nowhere from Writer/Director Ava DuVernay. The film stars Lorraine Toussaint (Law & Order), Dondre Whitfield (The Cosby Show), Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue), and Omari Hardwick (Sparkle, For Colored Girls), and follows a wife's journey of self discovery after her husband is sentenced to eight years in prison. Middle Of Nowhere is now playing at the Riverview Plaza in town.
On November 9th, it’s the movie LUV. The film stars Common, Megan Good, Charles Dutton and Dennis Haysbert.
The American Music Awards air November 18th on ABC.
WDAS Afternoon Drive Guy Michael Baisden will be in Philadelphia for the second Presidential debate on October 16th. WDAS will be hosting Michael at Audenried High School, 3301 Tasker Street, from 7pm until 11pm. This event is first come first served.

We remember Alex Karras. The football great died at the age of 77 from kidney failure and dementia. Karras had a 13-year career in the NFL playing for the Detroit Lions. He later went onto a stint as an analyst on ABC's Monday Night Football followed by acting. He's best known for his role as “Mongo” in Mel Brooks' legendary film comedy Blazing Saddles and as “George,” Emmanuel Lewis' guardian in the hit TV sitcom Webster that co-starred his wife, Actress Susan Clark.
Dr. Conrad Murray is afraid he will die in jail. Murray says he has blood clots and the condition may kill him. Murray was the late Michael Jackson's doctor. Murray was found criminally responsible for the death of Jackson and was sentenced to a four-year jail term.
Look for R Kelly and Tamia on Wednesday and Thursday, November 28th and 29th at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby. Kelly says his next CD, Black Panties, is coming out next year. Tamia's new CD is called Beautiful Surprise, which is also the name of her latest hit single.
Beyonce has pulled out of the movie project A Star Is Born. The Clint Eastwood project is now on hold again. This would have been the fourth time around for this film. The original came out in 1937 with Fredric March and Janet Gaynor. The first remake appeared in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason followed in 1976 by the Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson version. New mom Beyonce says her schedule is too busy right now.
In more Beyonce news, Get ready for the greatest hits of Destiny's Child. The group, which consisted of Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams and Beyonce before separating for solo careers, is celebrating their 15th anniversary. Greatest Hits arrives in stores October 15th.
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are on the cover of the latest edition of Ebony magazine.
Tyler Perry is on the cover of the latest issue of Essence magazine and his new movie, the detective thriller Alex Cross, opens in theatres October 19th. His latest Madea movie, Madea's Witness Protection, comes out on DVD on the 23rd. Perry recently announced a new partnership with Oprah Winfrey and her OWN cable network. Perry will be producing scripted shows on Winfrey's network. All of his new shows will be on the OWN while his previous shows (Meet The Browns, House Of Payne and For Better Or Worse) will remain on the TBS cable network. Perry was considering starting his own network, but he decided in the end it was easier to team with Oprah and her network. The Mighty "O" has been busy. She has been filming the Lee Daniels' movie The Butler. That film is about Eugene Allen, a man who was a service worker at The White House for eight presidents. The movie also stars Forest Whitaker, Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Jane Fonda. Winfrey, also, shares the cover of Forbes magazine with fellow Billionaires Warren Buffett and Bill Gates for The 400 Richest People In America issue. The Mighty "O" cracked Forbes top 200 as a media mogul.
Denzel Washington graces the latest edition of GQ magazine. Washington has two big projects on the horizon. His movie Flight, with Don Cheadle and John Goodman, opens in theatres in early November. Washington's second film is 2 Guns with Mark Wahlberg comes out next year. In a recent interview, Singer Al Green says if a movie were to be made about his life, he would love for Washington to play him on the big screen.
Sunny Anderson is back with a new show on the Food Network. Homemade In America airs Saturday Mornings at 9:30 a.m.
Will the third time be the charm? The late Donna Summer has been nominated for a third time into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Summer died from lung cancer in May at the age of 63. Other nominees include Public Enemy, NWA, The Marvelettes, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and Heart. The awards ceremony takes place April 8th. Inductees will be announced in December.
Gabrielle Union's new show, Being Mary Jane, debuts next February on BET.
Mike Tyson has been added to the cast of Scary Movie V.
Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins from the music group TLC is getting her own reality show. The show, Totally T-Boz, will air, ironically enough, on the TLC network and debuts next year. The 42-year old single mom is trying to jump start her career after having a brain tumor removed. Filming is happening in Atlanta and will feature her daughter and her brother.
Singer Kem is getting ready for the holidays. He has a new CD, What Christmas Means, coming out in October.
Singer Anita Baker is back. Her CD, Only Forever, is coming out this fall featuring the first single Lately, a cover of the Tyrese song.
Whoopi Goldberg is doing a guest turn on the new ABC show 666 Park Avenue. Goldberg will join regular cast member Vanessa Williams on the supernatural drama in December.
Bow Wow has been named one of the new hosts of BET’s 106 & Park. Bow Wow will be joining new comers Paigion, Shorty Da Prince and Miss Mykie.
Get ready for Black Girls Rock. This year's honorees include Alicia Keys, Kerry Washington, Susan L. Taylor and Dionne Warwick. The show airs Sunday, November 4th on BET. Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King are returning as hosts. Performers include Brandy and Keyshia Cole.
NeNe Leakes is on a roll. The new season of The Real Housewives Of Atlanta kicks off Sunday, November 4th. She is also one of the stars of the NBC show The New Normal, and she is featured with that show's cast in the latest issue of Vogue.
Tina and her sister Erica , a.k.a. Mary Mary, will return December 13th to the WE network for their reality series Mary Mary.
